Have you ever wanted to know more about the Kung fu (ch’üan fa) that was taught at a Shaolin Temple? Through many years of research, I believe that I have a plausible answer. The Hawaiian Kenpo story begins, like most martial arts systems, with the India monk, Bodhidharma. Bodhidharma taught Shaolin monks a series of techniques to defend themselves. In around 1200 AD, Genghis Khan burnt down the temple and a number of monks escaped to Japan where one of them taught the Mitose family Kung fu. After 20 generations, Dr. James Mitose, after learning what was called Kosho-ryu, decided to move to Hawaii where he started his own dojo. Mitose taught a man named Professor William Chow who in turn taught Ron Alo. Another person taking lessons at the same time from Chow was Ed Parker. Both Ed Parker and Ron Alo moved to the United States and started their own system. The martial art system that Professor Chow taught consisted of Self-Defense Techniques and no Kata. Ron Alo’s system of Hawaiian Kenpo-Karate included the Self-Defense Techniques learned from Professor Chow along with Kata and Fighting Drills. Fifty percent of the Self-Defense Techniques, as taught by Alo, are pictured in the book, What is Self-Defense (Kenpo Jiu-jitsu), by Dr. James Mitose. Hawaiian Kenpo became the martial arts system that Bill Marron learned in the late 60’s. In 1974, Dr. Crayton Moss begin his studies with Professor Marron. We hope you enjoy reading the Self-Defense Techniques as the Mitose family passed down through the centuries. This book is a written description of each Self-Defense Technique with no pictures. See (akkwacademy@gmail.com - akk-w.com/) for acomplete instructional DVD series that include the Self-Defense Techniques. This book includes:Detailed Lineage from 525 AD to presentDojo Information (what to expect)Basic Fundamentals (pictures included)Detailed Kata descriptions (no pictures)Technique Application (pictures included)Common Japanese Terminology in the dojoKata, Fighting Drills, and Self-Defense Technique SummaryThis is the Fifth edition of this book in a series of books that span Okinawa Kenpo (Okinawa Kenpo Karate and Kobudō; OKKKF), Okinawa Weapons (Kobudō, OKKKF), and Hawaiian Kenpo (American Kenpo-Karate Association; AK-KA). The main difference between the fourth edition and fifth edition includes the following:The 3C’s of the Black Belt Journey (New Information)Kata as a Music Score (New Information)Kinesiology and the Martial Arts (New Chapter)This book consist of a combined 140 years of training, practice, and sweat are represented by the authors within these pages. This book will provide new and seasoned students with the knowledge to take them from the very beginning ranks all the way to advanced degree black belts in Hawaiian Kenpo. Although this book should be used as a training guide and refresher, it should be noted that it will not teach a student of the martial arts by itself. If you are a student of martial arts, you will enjoy reading about this system. I would not be surprised if you found the system you are studying within the linage presented.About the Author: Dr. Crayton L. Moss is a retired Professor of Kinesiology with a doctorate degree in Education from the University of Kansas. He was a professor at various Christian universities and a tenured faculty member at Bowling Green State University. He taught for over 30 years at the university level until his retirement.
